Again, I know I haven't been here in a while! But I am definitely going to change that.

I have to say though...now that Wedding Season is in gear...we need to get our bodies in gear too! So Brides, Bridesmaids....fellow vendors! Why haven't you gotten your pair of Fit Flops yet??

I have been an avid wearer since 2007. I got my aunt and my mom wearing them. I see caterers wearing them while they are working in the kitchen. It's the best thing to wear while walking around the house, running errands...whatever! And you definitely feel a difference.

I wore them while I was pregnant and working weddings too and I never felt happier than to kick my heels off (yes, I still wore heels) and throw these on after a reception.

They have come out with some CUTE designs too..so there's no excuse not to try them!

Outer Banks Wedding Salon Updates

With only four more days till the big event, I am so excited with the feedback all the vendors (and even Brides) have been getting about the Salon!

A few updates....

We have received our itinerary for our tours, and those of you that are signed on will be very pleased. Lots of places to visit, and I am very sure you will find your venue for you wedding after the tours are through. And for those that haven't signed on yet...do it! You won't regret it!

The Salon has also reduced ticket pricing to $20.00 per couple and $15.00 for single tickets. So NOW is a great time to register!

A Learning Experience...And A Grain of Salt

It was recently brought to my attention that a review was made about me and my company, Je t’aime Weddings, on another wedding site.

In all my years as a Planner, I have never had a Bride that was unhappy with my work, let alone given a bad review.

I decided to leave her comments alone until I actually read it and saw that her post was falsely stated.

A Bride said that after she gave me a certain amount for a deposit (which was NOT the actual amount paid to me), that I never called her back and that I basically ignored her. That when she said she was unhappy and wanted a refund, I never gave her an explanation and never emailed her. Also, that I never helped her with vendors and never went to see the site she had chosen for her wedding.

So I am addressing the situation here on my Blog for anyone that may have questions about what was written.

A bride inquired on April 23, 2008 to see if I was available for the date of her wedding and I was hired for her October 11th destination wedding. On the 26th, she said she would definitely want me as her Planner and if I could get started on a list that she had right away because she was nervous about time.

Against my better judgment (and believe me I have learned from this) I wrote her, then spoke with her on the phone saying I would be glad to help her, and started working on her wedding right away...almost getting ahead of myself because I knew June would be a busy month; so I let her know that I would email her the contract. On top of my two-month service, they also hired me on an hourly basis stating they would need more help before the two-month mark.

When I sent her contract out via email on May 5th, 2008 for her to sign and mail back to me - she then emailed back saying that she would send it out the following day. A week went by and when I asked her if she had mailed it, she said she forgot and would send it.

Finally, she emailed me and asked if she could bring it down when her and her fiance came to visit the first week in June. Again, I went against my judgment and said yes.

When I met with them in June, I gave them names of Top Vendors here in the Outer Banks that I have already worked with - some, who I called beforehand personally asking them to set aside the October 11 date for this bride, and all gladly obliging because they knew the caliber of my work.

This Bride was very appreciative, and we specifically spoke about the coming weeks ahead. I assured her that even though June is a busy month for weddings for all of her vendors (including myself) that we would be in touch. Our consultation ended wonderfully with her and her fiancé thanking me for all my help that day, and throughout the past month.

That week I got extremely sick and after she spoke with my husband on my home line, and sent me a text message; I replied saying that I received her email and message and would be in touch with her after the weekend (I had a wedding I was preparing for).

The reason for my sickness was that I found out I was pregnant! I even told her that, and her response was asking me if I would be capable of handling her wedding. I explained her to that I have been pregnant during other weddings (we have two girls) and that I was fine to plan her event including three others following her date, but if she still felt unsure, to please let me know.

In the following 2 weeks, I answered all of her emails and replied to her last one saying I would not be able to speak with her until the following week (because of another wedding) but I would be working on any questions that was sent to me in the meantime.

Five days later I got an email expressing that she was unhappy with my last message and needed my help right away. And because I was unavailable to speak on the phone with her when I was working on another wedding, she wanted her deposit back. By this time it was the very end of June and past the two-week return period on her deposit. She also never paid her hourly fees due to me at that time.

Like all my contracts, the base of it outlines what my clients are hiring me for, the type of service they have chosen, what their total pricing is, and when the deposit is due (7 days after signing the contract). It also clearly states that they have 2 weeks after I have received their deposit before it is non-refundable.

In the August/September issue of Modern Bride, there is a Q&A section (page 188) that talks about Brides feeling they are not in enough contact with their vendors.

In the ‘Answer’ part, it states that we do have other obligations that need attending to, and that we are not avoiding our clients. That if, however, Brides feel that way, to please talk to the vendor to work something out with them.

I am always glad to hear what my Brides have to say, and willing to help them out because my ultimate goal is to have a happy client. This would not be my job if I felt otherwise!

In her review, this Bride also stated that she did not feel I had the experience to plan a wedding in the Outer Banks….

Just because I am from another state (New York) does not mean I have limited knowledge on planning a wedding. I have been coming to the Outer Banks for MANY years for vacations and events that have led me to come acquainted with the area. I have met and become friends with many wonderful vendors, all that have supported me as well!
In the time I have been here I have been recognized for my work and the innovative ideas I have brought to the weddings I have done.

Well! I know this was long, but it was time I had written something to right this wrong.

Some have said to “Let it go” and “Don’t worry about it”…but the truth is, I can’t!

I am too passionate about my work, and I truly do love what I do.

I know the more I grow in my business, the more I have to adapt. But that doesn’t mean I have to sit quiet about it! ….I don’t stay quiet about anything!!!

Definition Tees + Modern Bride

In the world of Text Messaging, my title means "Just So You Know". I wanted to start writing little tidbits here and there about certain events or happenings coming up.

Besides Weddings, and Dance, my other MAJOR love is FOOD! And I'm watching the Food Network when I'm not watching TLC or any other channel with wedding stuff on it.

So...Just So You Know, the Food Network is producing its annual Wedding Week starting next week! This is a great place (online or TV) to get ideas if you are having a caterer, or want a special plate on the menu. Food Network covers from the Bridal Shower to the main event itself. They even offer the recipes online so you can take it right to your chef.
They also show new and upcoming trends. Totally delicious and totally worth watching.

Take A Number

I am so glad that someone out there (besides me) thought that table number cards were looking a little drab.

I got an email from LoveBirdz showing their new designs for table numbers and it made my Wedding-Designing Day!

I have had brides design their own numbers, or use different names altogether so they didn't have to use "plain number cards". I have to admit that on a well-designed table, a simple card in a nice font, say, Edwardian or Civilian is just enough.

But for the Brides that are looking for that something extra, here is one site to check out.

They have different collections to choose from like: Beach, Monogram, Patterned, Winter, and other Themes. You can even design your own.

There are other companies out there that have their own designed cards, and if you are getting your invitations custom-made, they can probably create something for your tables as well.

Like all the other aspects of your wedding, be sure to do some research, and make sure it is on the details that you absolutely want.

Je T'aime Forever

For as long as I can remember, the word "Je T'aime" {meaning 'I Love You'} has been in my vocabulary.
My mom's side is part French and she would read recipes and little stories in French and could translate it like nothing. I took French class because of her, to perfect what I already knew, and took for granted.

I used to tell my high-school sweetheart Je T'aime all the time, which was returned with Te Amo, because he was half Spanish. It was an international love....it didn't work out.

Well, ever since I started up my business, I knew in my heart that this would be the perfect name. It was natural to me. But some would ask "Why won't you use something in the English language?"
Does it really matter? Love is Love in any language, right? (Except when you're 16).
Do the French really say it best? Are they really the experts on love? I think so! But I might be biased since it's in my family.

But I now know I am not the only one that thinks this. Lately, I am seeing my 'namesake' all over the place. I'm quite happy with that actually.

From Paper+Cup Designs in Brooklyn, NY, they have a little pin that goes with their invitation that says Je T'aime. I got a call from Minhee Cho last year regarding their new Era line of invitations, and I love it! Check it out.

There's another little site called Matter Matters, and they have the cutest little totes. I was born in Brooklyn, and that is my youngest daughter's name so naturally I felt a little sentimental with these.

They have a few other designs for these totes as well.

I then found a shirt that had Je T'aime across it, but alas no picture. Sorry!

I am working on a few things with my beloved name as well, and hopefully, it will show my LOVE for this business, and...well, everything that says 'I love you'!

Come On In, the Door's Open

I know, again I have been slacking in the world of blogs, and not writing any of my thoughts on weddings, or anything for that matter!

I said I was going to be doing excerpts on places here in the OBX, only to have a TON of pictures, and no stories posted. I have somewhat come to redeem myself. I will definitely be posting more soon, but for the meanwhile; I do have a store I want to write about now.

It's called "The French Door" and from the first time I entered, I knew it would become one of my favorites! The owner, Donna Greenlee, has captured the meaning of 'boutique' in every way .
The whole shoppe is literally one huge piece of eye-candy with bursts of flavor from every corner of the room.
I always joke with Donna that I know it's important to have eye contact with the person you're speaking with, but my eyes are always wandering to see all the interesting things instead of looking at her!

With that said, the blushing Bride would have a ball in this store. Donna has created these certificates called "Bridal Bucks" and the happy couple can use them when they register at The French Door. And the wonderful thing about this is, if your your guests come to pick something out from your list, whether you are a Destination Bride, or Local, they can ship most of anything from their store to you! Less bulk for your guests, and less for you to take back. I think that's a win-win situation.

Couples often ask why they should register someplace where they are having a Destination Wedding.

If one of the stores you mention is where your destination wedding is held, your guests are going to understand you are wanting something more than 'the blender' or 'towels'.
But also for the memory of where you had your wedding. You're looking for that sentiment.

When you see that certain piece, you will remember that you picked it out from that wonderful shop where you had one of the most memorable days of your life!

I may sound like I'm sugar-coating this a little. But the truth is, I have had brides register at their destination.
Besides the beautiful sentiment, guest will take the time to venture out and sight-see a little, and maybe see why you chose that place to hold your wedding.

The French Door is one of the perfect places to register, the staff is very helpful, and oh-so-sweet! I forgot to mention what they carry! It changes every time I go in, but it is always in the categories of: Serving Pieces, Home Decor, Luggage, Purses, Soaps, Lotions, Jewelry and so much more! They even have stationary for the perfect Thank-You Cards.

They have decorated for Christmas and it looks fabulous!

Princess Bride

Okay, Okay...I KNOW it has been FOREVER since I've posted anything! I am truly sorry for that...but with good reason! I have been tending to my Brides!

And, of course...they will always come first!

So I had this 'tres joli' Bride since January, and her wedding was just this past Friday (the 7th) at the Duck Woods Country Club in Southern Shores (OBX). I had such a blast helping her and her fiance plan this wedding...they were such a cute couple. I get so excited for all my Brides though. (Notice all the exclamation marks in this post alone!!!)

I don't have the wedding pictures yet, but the photographer gave me her Bridal Portraits. Let me just say...I LOVED them! In going through each picture, it was almost like a story was unfolding.

Kirsten Lewis from Innate Photographics is an award winning photographer with such an eye and artistic edge that her pictures come alive! (in a good way).

From now until December, I am (hopefully, and time permitting) going to be showcasing businesses here in the Outer Banks that cater to the Wedding Industry.
I am excited for the up and coming year and meeting all the new Brides that have chosen the Outer Banks as their Destination Wedding spot!

I'm veering a little off course, but getting to a point...

I was so happy to get Kirsten as my photographer for this wedding. I think it's so important for the Bride to feel comfortable and develop a relationship with the photographer. Kirsten does that with all her clients.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give my clients is to definitely have engagement and/or bridal portraits done. This give both parties the chance to get familiar with each other. Which, in turn creates a relaxed atmosphere...and not so much like work!

Here are just a few beautiful pictures of my Bride taken by Kirsten at the Elizabethan Gardens, and at the beach here in the Outer Banks. I love the Gardens, and in a few of these shots, it almost made me think of Alice in Wonderland on her wedding day. It was so enchanting!

Disney Brides

NEW YORK - So many brides say they want to look like a princess on their wedding day - and now we're about to find out if they mean really mean it.

The Walt Disney Co. has teamed with bridal designer Kirstie Kelly to create a collection of gowns inspired by the favorite Disney princess characters, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Ariel from "The Little Mermaid," Belle from "Beauty and The Beast" and Jasmine from "Aladdin."

But Kelly is quick to point out that "inspired by" doesn't mean gowns that look like they came from the animated movies, which have been translated many times over into dress-up costumes for little girls. Instead, the designs attempt to channel the personality of each princess in terms suitable for a real-life, modern woman.

"We wanted women to feel like they had something in common with these princesses. We had to identify who the princesses are now and who does the everyday girl relate to," Kelly said during a telephone interview prior to the gowns' runway debut Sunday during Bridal Fashion Week in Manhattan.

A mood and fashion sensibility was assigned to each princess-themed gown: Cinderella is for the classic glamour bride; Sleeping Beauty is about pretty romance; Snow White is sweet elegance; Ariel is sultry allure; Belle is stylish sophistication; and Jasmine is bohemian chic.

"It actually touches on every type of wedding," explained Kelly, who also has her own bridal couture label. "For the destination wedding there's Ariel or Jasmine, but if you're having 500 people in a ballroom, you're definitely the Cinderella gown."

When she got married several years ago, she would have gone for the Cinderella look, Kelly said, although now she would lean the slimmer shape, such as the Jasmine gown.

Andy Mooney, chairman of Disney Consumer Products Worldwide, said that when the company began developing the marketing concept of the princesses six or seven years ago, the company discovered that the demographic wasn't limited to the 2- to 8-year-olds Disney was expecting. "We've been blown away how strong the demand is for princess thematic things in almost every stage of a woman's life," he said.

Adult women buy into a sort of lifestyle role play, he explained. As a brand, Disney has a built-in reputation for quality and trust, Mooney added, so it doesn't start from scratch when it enters categories such as cruise travel, better furniture or wedding gowns.

The decision to go into the bridal market was largely made because of that princess dream so many brides talk about, Mooney said. "Every bride wants to be Cinderella but she also wants to be classic, feminine and beautiful. Kirstie has allowed a woman to enter the princess fantasy but in a way that's absolutely appropriate for the event."

Plus, 1,500 couples do say "I do" at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida each year.

The gowns will be sold at bridal salons. Kelly said Disney identified a void in the mid-tier level of gowns for brides who want to spend between $1,100-$3,400.

Women often start their gown shopping with the idea that they want to be different from everyone else, but they change their tune once they start trying on dresses. "Looking like Cinderella is probably something they never considered before they got engaged, but then the traditional side almost always comes out. It's hard to resist romance and sparkle," Kelly said.

That said, bridal retailers are always looking for the new thing that can help their store stand out - and that's what gives Disney a good chance at the market, said Carley Roney, editor in chief of TheKnot.com.

"As to consumers, the success of this line all depends on the dress design," she said in an e-mail to the AP. "The Disney brand has a strong, positive, emotional meaning for a surprising number of people - consider the couples who choose to get married at Disney. But I see these Disneyphiles' as being a relatively small group. As to the women who have no real Disney brand loyalty, if the dress designs are strong enough, they will probably overlook the brand association."

Roney envisions suburban brides on the younger side as the target customer. And, while a lot of women toss around the words "fairytale" and "princess" about their weddings, she thinks they're talking more of an ultra-luxurious celebrity wedding.

But Disney's Mooney points out that a woman's first impression of love often comes from an animated character and it's hard to completely erase that from her mind. "If you think about who the first person who teaches you about love, romance and Prince Charming is, it probably happened between the ages of 2-5 and included Disney."

Keep It Cool

One thing Brides need to remember when getting married on the beach is that it's HOT. Down here in the Outer Banks, it is still very warm in September.

So it's good to have a game-plan for your day {wedding planners come in very handy ;) }, and remember NOT to have a meltdown. A lot of Brides opt to have their reception outside as well, and with the weather it's hard to keep your make-up from having a melt-down.

I found this bag and thought how useful it would be come the day to say 'I Do'. It's called IcyBag.

I saw these mints at a shop a while ago and was totally excited to try it! A marriage of 'pretty' form meets total function...for any woman, bride or not!

I got nostalgic while picking up these cute tins, reminding me of those little lip glosses you would buy at the drugstore that slid out to the side. I LOVED those!

These are Little i Mints, and they have a personality series out now that's perfect for the Bride to keep in her clutch the day of the wedding.

Welcoming Your Out-of-Town Guests

For a significant number of your friends and family members, showing up for your nuptial celebration may mean hopping on a plane to cross state lines. These out-of-towners will go to a lot of effort and expense to share in your momentous occasion, so it's your job to welcome them, help them get around, and keep them entertained. With that in mind, here's how to put them at ease.

Essential Details

One of the simplest, yet probably most useful, things you could do for your guests is to provide a wedding itinerary. After sending out your invitations, mail guests an additional clever, elegant, or interesting communique with a complete rundown of the events leading up to and following your walk down the aisle. In addition, create a wedding web page for an easily referenced one-stop-shop for guests to check up on everything you have planned. In both cases, include key times, locations, who is hosting, what to wear, and so on for each activity. Tell your visitors about any free time they'll have, and provide suggestions for how to fill it. There may be events you have in mind (such as a brunch the morning after the wedding) that travelers should know about in advance so they can schedule their trips around them.

Be aware that since many of your guests are taking to the skies, they may be turning your nuptial event into a weekend getaway or part of a vacation. Also, remember that some of your guests may never have visited the area before. You may wish to add in "travel guide" bits of information to your pre-wedding itinerary to get guests excited about the journey. For example, if there are some great sights to see or points of interest to visit, tell your guests in case they'd like to do some exploring. Do some research and investigate which museums will have amazing exhibits showing, whether or not the local sports team is playing a home game, and what musical or other cultural performances will be happening.

Shelter & Travel

Though footing the bill for travelers' overnight accommodations and flights isn't your responsibility, you and your fiance should offer suggestions for how to find both (and tips on how to score good deals will no doubt be appreciated by guests). Be sure to put important details for airlines and hotels (website and street addresses, phone numbers, directions, and cost information) on an insert sent out with your invitations, or post it separately on your wedding itinerary or web page so guests can book their flights and rooms early and know how to get around once they arrive.

Recommend different places for guests to stay. Look for locations near your ceremony and reception sites, and start calling around about six months beforehand to check on large-scale availability for the days surrounding your wedding, and to inquire about special group rates. To get the best deal for your guests, reserve blocks of rooms at a couple of hotels. Keep your guest's probable budget range in mind, and recommend both fancy fare for those flush with cash and a less expensive alternative for the budget-minded. For the best airfares, try getting in touch with the airlines directly. Inquire about frequent-flyer deals, special discounts, and group rates for those who may all be flying in from the same place.

Getting Around

Some out-of-towners will choose to rent cars (be sure to provide car rental info with your hotel and airline details), but for those who don't, you'll have to figure out how they'll get to and from the wedding. Cover all the bases: organize a fleet of relatives that will act as chauffeurs, talk to the hotel manager to arrange for a hotel shuttle, hire a car or limo service, or rent a few vans or a bus.

It's also a kind gesture to have someone pick up non drivers from the airport -- especially if they're new to the area or get nervous traveling. Recruit volunteers for this: parents, next of kin, and friends are likely targets. Put together a roster of arrival times, and have trekkers greeted at the gate with signs bearing their names (be sure to let guests know you've arranged this, and clue them in on who to look for).

Surprise Treats

Comfort the jet-lagged and travel-weary with a little something left in their hotel rooms. Imagine their delight -- walking into their temporary living quarters and discovering a basket of fresh fruit, a bouquet of flowers, a tin of local chocolates, or a bottle of chilled bubbly. What you choose to give depends on your resources, and can be as lavish as a free massage at the hotel spa or as simple as a plate of homemade chocolate-chip cookies. The purpose is to let guests know you appreciate their effort to join you for your special day.

Create welcome packets of relevant information (phone numbers of the families of the bride and groom, the names of the other guests staying at the hotel, nearby hot spots to check out) to leave in guests' rooms with another copy of your wedding itinerary, plus local brochures and sightseeing maps. Enlist the aid of your wedding crew to assemble and distribute all these treats. Finally, add that finishing touch and pen a personal note thanking each guest for coming to celebrate with you.

Evening Entertainment

Leading up to the main event, you may have plenty to fuss over, but out-of-town guests may not. Don't leave them in the lurch with nothing to do. If many guests are showing up the night before the ceremony, suggest ways they can stay amused while you hold the rehearsal dinner. Ask a friend or relative to host a gathering like a backyard barbecue or pizza party to help guests get to know one another. Or arrange to have everyone meet together at a restaurant or bar. Better yet, create a more casual rehearsal dinner, and open up the invite list to include everyone who might be around. For guests who like to entertain themselves, be sure to supply a roster of your favorite restaurants, shops, and local movie theaters as a thoughtful gesture.

Time In-Between

Though recommended, sometimes it's not possible to have your reception immediately follow your ceremony. If there will be a lengthy break between your "I dos" and the party, or your ceremony is late in the day, try to come up with a game plan. During a lull, some people won't mind going back to the hotel and kicking back. But others may be interested in touring your stomping grounds. If guests will have the morning free, suggest a game of golf or a visit to a museum. With lots of spare time between the main events, you could organize an excursion, such as taking a group of guests to visit nearby attractions or to see a movie.

Quality Time

Remember the reason that these intrepid travelers have come is to see you, so make sure they do. Pull them aside amid all the revelry for some one-on-one attention, or make it a point to tell them at the receiving line how much seeing them means to you. Raise your glass during toasting time to acknowledge those who have come from afar, and consider setting up something special for journeyers, such as a brunch the morning after the ceremony (if you aren't already off to a magnificent honeymoon).

It's All About the Bride

Are you five or six months away from your wedding? While you're addressing invitations and picking out bridesmaids dresses, take some time to work on your beauty regimen. Making an investment now will pay off big on your wedding day.

Skin Care

Now is the time to start working on your skin. On your wedding day, you'll be having your picture taken close-up and many people getting close to your skin as they hug and kiss you. Even a relatively nice complexion can benefit from six months of stress-relief, proper nutrition, and added water-drinking.

First, start a good cleansing program. You should be using a multi-step system including
- a good cleanser appropriate for your skin-type in the mornings
- make-up remover and cleanser at night
- daily moisturizer
- an exfoliant once to several times a week.
I love the skin regiment from Skyn Iceland. As a planner in the middle of expanding my business, I am always thinking with the Bride in mind. This company recently sent me their best-seller Detox Kit, and I was the guinea pig for thirty days. I have seen such a difference in my skin and can honestly say it makes a difference.
If you can afford it, this is a great time to consult a professional dermatologist. Tell them your wedding date, and your skin-care goals.

They may recommend treatments such as glycolic peels or regular facials that will help you have picture-perfect skin. Prescription medicine may also be helpful. Also, if you take birth-control medication, talk to your doctor about which kind is best for your skin and body. Switching birth-control brands may make a dramatic difference in your skin.

Examine how much water you drink daily. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses daily will help clear up blemishes and make your skin more luminous. I suggest filling a water bottle and keeping it on your desk at work. Have another water bottle in the TV room (or wherever you tend to hang out at night). While drinking this much water may be a challenge at first, keep at it, and it will get easier and easier.

While you're increasing your water consumption, it's a great time to be decreasing your caffeine consumption. Not only will less caffeine help your skin, it will also help you to be less stressed out! You know if you're better off going cold turkey or decreasing gradually.
Hair

If you want to grow out your hair for your wedding, or try a different color or style, now is the time to talk to your hairstylist. Those on a budget can try some drugstore coloring experiments. You'll still have the chance to correct any mistakes! It's also the time to start your search for a wedding day hairstylist and makeup artist. Even if you aren't planning on using professionals, you'll want to ask your friend or family member for their help now to make sure they are available and willing.

Start thinking about the overall health of your hair. You may want to start applying a deep conditioning treatment (available inexpensively at drugstores) once a week. If your hair is dry, consider changing to a moisturizing shampoo and/or shampooing less often. And stop diving headlong into that chlorinated water if you have light blonde hair.

Stress

It's hard to be beautiful when you're tearing your hair out. Start out by dealing with people who stress you out, my previous entry on wedding stress has some ideas for you to try. Exercise, yoga, and other physical activities will help build strength, energy, and relieve tension while you're at it. You might want to talk to your doctor about good nutrition and exercise routines. Consider regular visits to a spa to help you relax and improve your skin while you're at it!

Smile

Beach Wedding Tips

To make your beach wedding more perfect here are a few good tips to remember:

Mobility
While the image of a couple and their guests barefoot on the beach is quite romantic, it's not that practical unless your guest list is on the small side. Walking on sand can be awkward and older guests may not feel comfortable doing so. Some beach locations don't allow for seating so your guests may have to stand throughout the service. As an alternative, consider a ceremony set up on a boardwalk or grassy knoll that overlooks the beach. After the vows, the bride, groom, and photographer can go down to the beach for those special shots. In the Outer Banks, there are a few hotels that offer a beautiful wide deck to accommodate your guest as a ceremony alternative.

What to Wear
Casual- If your ceremony is held directly on the beach, you'll want to opt for a dress that is no longer than tea length. Since your guests will be barefoot too, it makes sense to inform them that the event is somewhat casual.

Semi-Formal- You still have the option of wearing a tea-length, or a simple floor-length gown. A lot of brides decide to wear flip flops under their dress.

Formal- Usually, a formal beach wedding is held on deck or platform overlooking the ocean. Although, it is still outside, the bride may opt for heels.
If you choose to have your formal affair on the beach, and depending on the style of your dress, it is not uncommon to have a runner to protect your dress from getting too dirty.

It Gets Hot
Most beaches are wide open without any tree cover to provide shade. Depending on the season and location of the beach, guests at midday events run the risk of getting scorched by the sun. Remember that besides the air temperature, the sand gets really hot too. In fact, in some locations, it may be downright uncomfortable or painful to walk on the sand. You may want to schedule a morning wedding or one at dusk to avoid any heat-related problems.

Quality of the Sand
Some beaches are powdery soft while others and strewn with beautiful (yet sharp!) seashells. At some beaches, you and your guests may need to wear sandals to prevent being cut on shells or coral.

Sun Glare
If your wedding is at midday, you run the risk of sun glare. (That's right. A million photos of the bride and groom squinting at each other as they recite their vows.) Before the wedding, go to the beach at the time your wedding is slated for and determine which way to face in order to minimize glare and discomfort for the bride and groom and guests.

Noise
You want your guests to hear every word of the ceremony and the vows that took hours to write. Yet, a beach can be a pretty noisy place. Make sure that your ceremony is not set up too close to the crest of the waves hitting the shoreline. (Outgoing tides are quieter than those coming in so you may want to check a tidal chart before selecting your ceremony time.)

Bugs & Insects
Depending on the season and ceremony time, mosquitoes or other uninvited pests may become a problem. Light citronella candles or make sure everyone applies bug repellent before arriving to the beach.

Getting permission
Many beaches are public or on the grounds of a state park. You'll need to get check local ordinances and get the approval of the county clerk's office or the management of the park. In many cases, you'll also have to pay a fee for a permit. These governing agencies will also let you know if chairs, arches, open flames (candles), and musicians are allowed on the beach. Check these details before falling in love with any one location.

The Wedding Stress

When you’re stressed out about your wedding, and don't have the time or money to have a Spa Day...because all your time and money are wrapped in your wedding -- what do you do?
You need stress relief and you need it NOW. Here are three easy things you and your honey can do together to chill out.

Deep Breathing
Lie down on the floor or a quiet place and close your eyes. Inhale deeply through your nose, letting air flow into your stomach area. Picture your body filling with peace as you inhale and the stress flowing out of you as you exhale deeply. Let your mind clear, as you focus on your body filling with air. Repeat until your breathing is slow and relaxed.

Stretching
You’ve probably noticed your body getting crunched up. Perhaps you have aches, or tension headaches. These are all signs of your body holding onto that stress.
Take time to stretch, breathing deeply as you do so. Yoga is a great way to stretch, de-stress, and clear your mind. An easy one is the “child’s pose” – Sit on your feet and bend forward, trying to stretch your spine, and bringing your forehead as close to the floor as possible. Lay your arms at your side as you close your eyes and breath deeply.

Adjust your diet
When you’re stressed out, you’ll want to avoid caffeine, chocolate and alcohol – those foods that are easy to reach for, but only increase your stress level. Make sure to drink lots of water and try to eat more vegetables which will help keep your system clear.

Take time to enjoy peaceful surroundings
Go on a ten minute walk in the middle of your day to appreciate nature and architecture. Avoid thinking about anything wedding related, and instead focus on what you’re seeing and how nice it feels to be outside. You’ll come back in far more able to deal with what’s going on.

New Trends

There's a new trend coming about in the wedding industry, and one I seem to like because it makes the day more personal.

Lately, more and more couples are incorporating their own treasured pieces in their wedding. For example, a bride used a set of assorted antique vases her aunt had given her to decorate her registration table. It was the perfect backdrop with votives and flowers.

Another wanted a memorial table for her father, and grandparents that passed away in the registration area at her reception. On her gift registry she slotted for a tall mosaic hurricane candle that stood behind the pictures of her loved ones.

And who's to say you have to go with tradition? A wedding is a celebration! So go with your own style and design it based on your tastes and ideas.

When registering for gifts, couples are registering for items they will use for years to come.
They are items that express their style and when received by a friend or family member becomes sentimental as well. Brides are using certain gifts they receive to add their personal touch to their wedding.

A beautiful set of picture frames from a bridesmaid could be used for childhood pictures to display.
Like my bride, she registered for the hurricane candle and used it for her memorial table; now it is part of her living room decor.

New Items

I am so excited because I have found some really wonderful new products for my web site. I love shopping for wedding items and these three new companies that I've signed with have exactly what I'm looking for.

I recently got an email from an old client that is in England now. They just celebrated their first anniversary and was so happy to hear from them. That email made me think of what a close relationship I attained in helping her coordinate her out-of-town wedding.

It also got me thinking of how many shopping trips, phone calls, and endless searching through magazines and web sites I did to help her find the stylish touches she wanted to make her wedding personal. Not that I minded, because that's my job...but on building this web site with today's bride in mind, that was one hectic journey I wanted to either shorten, or eliminate altogether.

Why am I so excited for my site to launch? Aside from the obvious reason that it's unique, and I will be introducing new items with traditional ones as well, is the idea of the feeling behind my site.
I've seen how confused and frustrated brides can get when they are picking out their invitations, favors and accessories. I want brides to be excited for their wedding, not have a headache. When they look at my site, I think they'll be excited again.

When I talk to a bride and narrow down what their likes and dislikes are, I will be able to say "Yes, I know exactly what you mean...because I carry that."

Busy!

So this is my first posting! After a few months of my smart cousin telling me to set this up, I am finally doing it!
I guess this will give me a moment to stop working and give myself a breather. I have been so busy trying to get this website going for my business, and it is MORE work than I thought! But I'm working on something that I love so it's not that bad.
It's been a learning experience in talking to manufacturers and distributors and weeding out what products I want to carry. It's coming together though and will be so excited and very much relieved when it is done! But is it ever really done?....NO!
Thanks to the same smart cousin of mine (Marc) he has helped me piece together my site..I know I couldn't have done it without him!
All this, and keeping a family together! John has been so helpful, and we have made it a point to go to the beach and enjoy it while the weather is nice.
We live in such a beautiful and relaxing place; we need to take advantage of it before a hurricane comes through! :)
Brooklyn is walking and Jalen started kindergarten...we CAN'T believe how fast time flies! We are so grateful for our girls, and for our family. They remind us to stay young and enjoy this life.
